17 October 2009: The multiple terrorist attacks in Pakistan profoundly complicate the Af-Pak situation for the United States and sharply threaten India's security. The multiple attacks are new in the sense that they highlight a fiery alliance between the Pakistani Taliban in South Waziristan in FATA with south Punjab terrorists with funding sources from Karachi and overseas. If the Pashtun and Punjabis can ally against the Pakistan state (masterminded by the Al-Qaeda), despite Pakistani state attempts to keep them at loggerheads, then the state is much more seriously threatened than previously imagined, with the vulnerability of the Pakistan army and intelligence establishments to a jihadi takeover most strongly indicated.
