22 September 2010: In nearly all the commenting and analysis about Kashmir, the dangers arising from the impending US defeat in and withdrawal from Afghanistan have been ignored. If they are taken into account, the existing security architecture in J and K, with the Indian Army leading the counter-terrorism effort, protected by the AFSPA, would be left intact. Indeed, a case may be made to increase troop concentrations in the state to factor for the violence that is sure to grow in Afghanistan as the US prepares to leave, and to insure against both Pakistani and Afghani incursions in J and K when large parts of at least eastern and southern Afghanistan fall to the invading Taliban once American forces withdraw.
