2 July 2008: Assuming Deora's assertion to be true, it would suggest that the PMO accepted that Baalu's demands were controversial. But the fact that eight PMO letters, not one or two, were written show that the PMO came under considerable pressure from Baalu and presumably his boss, Karunanidhi. In effect, coming under pressure from a coalition partner, Manmohan Singh was willing to condone a wrong-doing. If the matter were not exposed, and the courts were not seized of the issue, Baalu & Co would have had their way. This incident shows how Manmohan Singh, despite his attempts to portray a clean image, is unable to take a firm stand against corruption and nepotism in the government.
