25 September 2009: Should India have thermonuclear weapons? That can only be answered if one other question can be answered before, which is, does India have the capability to make thermonuclear weapons? Nuclear scientists and strategists are split on this. Nuclear scientists who are part of the government/ atomic energy establishment, including R.Chidambaram and Anil Kakodkar (a former weaponizer), say India has the capability to make thermonukes upto two hundred kilotons (which would qualify as mini-nukes among the bid daddies of H-bombs). They contest the claim of former establishment nuclear scientists/ physicists like P.K.Iyengar (a highly respected former weaponizer) and K.Santhanam that the thermonuclear weapon tested in May 1998 in Pokhran fizzled out.
