21 July 2008: There is a similar problem with the first Mr Clean, V.P.Singh, and the second one, prime minister Manmohan Singh. It is that while they have tolerated corruption all around them in their political careers, they have somehow maintained an image of honesty, and have had their minions advertise it. V.P.Singh, before he was sidelined and eventually thrown out of the Congress on the Bofors scandal, was in the inner circle of the ruling party, close to Mrs Indira Gandhi, whose picture adorned his office much after he broke with her son. He was, to boot, UP's chief minister, in the most important time for the state, and it is impossible that in that position, he did not witness corruption.
