19 June 2009: It may not be readily apparent but India faces similar attempts at containment that it did during much of the Cold War that bottled it up within South Asia and prevented its natural expansion Indian Ocean-ward. Then, during the Cold War, especially in the Seventies, Nixon pushed by Kissinger wanted close ties with China against the Soviet Union and Pakistan was attempting to broker this closeness. But China and Pakistan both wanted their respective pounds of flesh and in the sub-continent, their interests converged in keeping India contained. Which is why Indira Gandhi's audacious move to create Bangladesh so upset the US (which dispatched a nuclear-armed carrier task force) and China (which may have opened a second front against India if the 1971 war had prolonged or threatened the existence of West Pakistan).
