14 May 2010: To hear counter-terror experts like Bruce Riedel is to believe that America has few options to protect itself from Pakistani terrorism. Following the failed New York Times Square bombing, the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, spoke tough, warning Pakistan of grave consequences if the next attempt succeeded. State department officials and the envoy to Af-Pak, Richard Holbrooke, were quick to play down the warning. The US military also tried to assuage angry and perhaps hurt Pakistani generals, reposing faith in Pakistan's efforts against terrorism.
